3 things I wish someone had told me about starting a business
Updated: Apr 24, 2019
If you are in the process of starting up a small business, here are a few things that I wish someone had told me when I was setting up Seed Accounting Solutions. It is definitely a rollercoaster ride that sometimes you are desperate to make stop but keep on going, The ups and downs are definitely worth the ride.
1. Life on all fronts would be an emotional rollercoaster. To problems with staff, personal and business finances, new client highs, losing client lows and everything in between. You build resilience to this, and it helps to know that in the low times, it won’t be forever, and to be cautious about the good times.
2. My business would affect my entire family. I have been lucky to have an extremely supportive husband who went part time to enable me to focus on my business, while he did more childcare. He truly believes in my vision, my ability to get the business to work in the way I want it to, and understands that sometimes I have to work all evening and leave him to watch TV on his own. My kids have spent more hours than I can fathom watching TV, playing on tablets and being generally self-sufficient (they are currently 6 and 3 and a half!) – but they understand that sometimes, I just HAVE to do 5 more minutes of work.
3. Things rarely pan out as you’d expect. I knew that I wanted to build a business where I wasn’t dealing with the day-to-day tasks, but the services I offer, the businesses I serve, the tasks I DO actually do, I’d never have imagined I’d be doing them three and a half years ago, or indeed, that I’d be any good at them!
