An interview with our Director and Founder, Tamsyn Jefferson-Harvey
Today we share with you more about our Director and Founder Tamsyn Jefferson-Harvey and the motivation behind Seed Accounting Solutions.
How did you get the idea for your business?
Having worked as a finance manager for a small business, I saw the lack of communication between accountants and small businesses and realised there was a real gap in the market for accountants who actually communicated with their clients on an ongoing basis. Most traditional accountants were contacting their clients once a year, crunching the numbers and sending them back. I wanted to create and nurture relationships.
What was your mission at the outset?
To offer a fresh, new approach to accountancy and bookkeeping services that enabled small business owners to focus on their business and understand their finances.
What’s your company’s goals?
To provide small business owners with enough information and support to make them feel comfortable with their business finances.
What is unique about your business?
We communicate with our clients at their level, and on a regular basis, we look forwards as well as back, and we care about their success.
What made you choose this type of business?
Having worked across a variety of industries and in a variety of roles, the common denominator was helping people. I truly care about helping people succeed in life and achieve their work/life goals.
What does your typical work day look like?
My days always start with task assignment. I dump everything that needs doing on a blank page in my diary and then work out what urgently needs doing, what is important, and what can wait. I update this list every morning. I utilise time blocking to ensure I get these tasks done. My days vary greatly, but usually consist of responding to email queries from clients, talking to prospective clients and providing them with quotes and information, meeting up with clients, and setting new clients up on Xero and Receipt Bank.
Does your company help the community where it is located?
We regularly advertise in Carlisle Infant School programmes, helping them raise money for the school and the children. In addition, I help run the local entrepreneurs Facebook group, coordinating meetings and the running of the group.
Have you ever turned down a client?
Yes – sometimes clients just aren’t right for us. We specialise in small and micro businesses. Our client base is made up of clients looking for support and advice, reassurance and someone they feel comfortable with. Sometimes it is clear that a client will need a difference service. I have a great network of accountants that I willingly refer these clients to so that they aren’t left hanging.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Set up processes and systems from the get-go. This will mean that when the time is right, and you can afford to take on an extra pair of hands, the systems and processes have been well thought-through and it is easier to delegate.
